What actually decides comfort is the gap between the seat and the underside of the table — aim for 10–12". Measure to the bottom of the table's apron rather than the tabletop, since an apron can take 2–4" of legroom. Note too that the cushion compresses about an inch under weight, so the seat sits slightly lower in use than on paper. For spacing, allow about 24" of table edge per person: at 20.5" wide these chairs leave comfortable elbow room, so a 60" rectangular table takes two per long side.

In practice, shearling rewards regular brushing and needs prompt blotting when something spills; bouclé is lower-effort day to day, though its loops can snag on claws and pill under heavy friction. For a household with pets or young children, bouclé is the more forgiving of the two.

Blot, never rub — and let it dry on its own. For shearling: lift solids off with the edge of a spoon, blot with a cloth dampened in cool water and a little wool-safe detergent, then dry naturally away from sun and radiators and brush the wool back up to restore its loft. Never use bleach, alkaline cleaners, or enzyme detergents — they break down wool fibre. For bouclé: dab rather than scrub so you lift the mark out instead of working it into the loops; mild detergent in lukewarm water handles coffee or juice, while an oil-based mark may need a little upholstery solvent. Skip bleach, vinegar, and antibacterial sprays. Vacuum either fabric weekly, and if a bouclé loop pulls, trim it flush rather than pulling it.
